Overview of the Thalikku Thangam Scheme by Tamil Nadu Government
The Thalikku Thangam Scheme, also known as the Gold for Mangalsutra Scheme, is a flagship initiative by the Tamil Nadu government to support economically disadvantaged families during their daughters’ weddings. This welfare scheme is part of the broader Marriage Assistance Schemes under the Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department. The primary goal is to reduce the financial burden on poor families by offering financial aid and gold to help with marriage expenses. Under this scheme, eligible brides receive financial assistance along with gold coins for making the Thirumangalyam (Mangalsutra).
It encourages timely marriages and supports women’s dignity by ensuring marriage expenses don’t hinder their futures. Furthermore, it promotes female education by setting minimum educational qualifications as an eligibility criterion. Over the years, thousands of women from economically weaker sections have benefited. By targeting social welfare and gender equity, the scheme plays a vital role in poverty alleviation. Overall, this initiative reflects Tamil Nadu’s commitment to women’s empowerment and inclusive development.
Financial Assistance and Benefits under the Scheme
Under the Thalikku Thangam Scheme, eligible brides receive a 22-carat gold coin weighing 8 grams, which can be used to make the Mangalsutra. In addition to the gold, a cash assistance of ₹25,000 to ₹50,000 is also provided, depending on the bride’s level of education. Girls who have completed 10th standard are eligible for ₹25,000, while those who hold a Degree or Diploma from a recognized institution can receive up to ₹50,000. This dual support helps families manage wedding-related expenses while incentivizing the education of young women.
The funds are typically disbursed through bank transfer or in combination with National Savings Certificates (NSC). Importantly, there is no income ceiling if the bride is an orphan or has completed higher education. The scheme’s structure encourages families to invest in girls’ education, knowing that better benefits await. By covering symbolic and financial costs, the scheme reduces the pressure of dowry and promotes dignified marriages for women from underprivileged backgrounds.
